GOLCONDA
is one of the famous forts in
India. The name is originated from the telugu word " GOLLA KONDA " meaning "SHEPHARDS HILL".
The origins of the fort can be traced back to the
Yadava Dynasty & The
KAKATIYAS of WARANGAL.
GOLCONDA was originally
a mud fort which passed to the BAHMANI DYNASTY & later to the QUTH SHAHIS,
who held it from year 1518 A.D to 1687 AD. The first three " QUTB SHAHI KINGS
" rebuilt GOLCONDA,over a span of 62 years over . |

The Tombs of the legendary Qutb Shahi kings lie to the north of Golconda fort, about a kilometer away. Planned
& built by the Qutb Shahis them selves, these Tombs are said to be the oldest historical monuments in Hyderabad. This is perhaps the only place in the world where the mortal remains of an entire dynasty
lie buried together. The Tombs are built in Persian, Pathan & Hindu architectural styles using granite, with stucco ornamentation . The galleries of the smaller Tombs are of a single story while the
larger one are usually two-storied .In the center of each Tomb is a sarcophagus which over lies the actual burial vault in acrypt below .The domes were originally overlaid with blue & green tiles of
which now only a few pieces remain. The beautiful domed mausolea lie today silent & nostalgic in what used to be the old rose gardens where fountains played & Koel birds Called.
